Design Process

I like to experiment, a lot, with space as part of my process. I find that my mind works best when I approach design projects as an opportunity to reverse engineered 3D space. I enjoy finding what might be assumed to be the limits or hinderances of a space and then try to break those boundaries in novel ways. Much of my theatrical design experience has been in found and adapted spaces, whereas my art experience has been grounded in model making, reproduction and casting, and subtractive mediums. While these spaces might not have been intended to be a performance space more than their intended, I find that the usage history and negative forms within the space fosters my resourcefulness and aids in the creation of novel uses and designs in these places. My focus has always been on creating practical and functional use of a space and acknowledging its quirks. Once those needs are met, I strive to allow the spirit of the show or design to permeate every choice I make to create an environment that is both alive and true to the voice of the work. It is my belief that many challenges that hinder conventional design wisdom can be used to great artistic advantage if viewed as a resource rather than an obstacle.

I work in multiple mediums and prefer to draft using 3D CAD modeling. I provide renderings in either gouache or digital paintings and can create paint mock ups for a wide variety of scenic treatments.
